"Emergency treatment and healing with the greatest level of skill"

Informed by this principle and with the highest degree of personal commitment, experienced physicians, nurses, carers, physiotherapists and other medical specialists care for their patients at the BG Clinic Ludwigshafen, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. Almost 1000 members of staff work here.

Open to all

The high-tech medical facility is open to all patients; not only those with occupational injuries but also to patients with sport injuries, arthritis and those who suffered accidents and disease in the private sphere.
In the interdisciplinary out-patients' department, patients are cared for by a team of physicians from various specialist areas. Not only emergency patients are treated but also patients receiving scheduled treatments, from deformities or joint damage through artificial replacement joints for hips, knees and shoulders to complex operations on the spinal column as well as plastic and hand surgery. Specialist clinic hours – such as for sport injuries – are another strength; as are the integration of self-help groups and a wide range of out-patient therapy options.

Specialist in many areas

The BG Clinic offers 418 beds. As a specialist traumatological clinic it serves the needs of the Rhine-Neckar region. In addition to accident surgery and orthopaedics, plastic, hand and tumour surgery, the clinic is also specialised in the treatment of spinal cord injuries, in technical orthopaedics and intensive medicine, pain medicine and rehabilitation as well as knee and hip endoprosthetics. Also integrated in the clinic is the most modern centre in Europe for the surgical treatment of severe and extremely severe burns, as well as an interdisciplinary spinal column centre and a clinic for people suffering from irradiation injuries.
For treating infectious complications in the bone, joints and prostheses there is an independent department for septic surgery within the BG Clinic– an outstanding centre of competence that draws patients from all over Germany. At the start of 2009 an independent department for neurosurgery was established.
Every year over 10,000 people receive in-patient treatment at the BG Clinic Ludwigshafen with another 20,000 or so out-patients. The surgical teams perform around 25,000 operations each year.

Recipe for success: a holistic approach to treatment

Our philosophy is to treat our patients holistically. For us rehabilitation starts at the accident location. The ADAC helicopter ambulance "Christoph 5" stationed at the BG Clinic flies missions within a range of around 50 kilometres. It transports specially trained emergency physicians to the accident location in the shortest possible time and brings patients directly to the clinic. Also after operations, rehabilitation and physiotherapy – which are performed on the clinic site to the highest technical level and with the latest equipment – the BG Clinic remains true to its mission of responsibility for its patients.

Always with its finger on the pulse

One of our central aims is to ensure that the treatment of our patients is always state-of-the-art.
Another key objective is the high quality training offered to students and our young physicians. Among the many options open to them at our clinic is that of obtaining doctorate or a post-doctoral teaching qualification.
Our research activities are largely conducted in close cooperation with other institutions, especially with establishments associated with the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim.
In the context of a cooperation agreement with the University of Heidelberg, our clinic assumes responsibility for teaching, research and also patient treatment in the areas of accident surgery as well as hand, plastic and burns surgery.
