Emergency medicine – helicopter ambulance, intensive mobile unit and senior emergency physicians as well as the emergency medical centre

The anaesthetists of our department are also available for emergency call-outs with the helicopter ambulance "Christoph 5". In the case of serious accidents and also for severe illnesses (e.g. heart attacks), they receive an emergency call-out and fly directly to the emergency location with the helicopter ambulance. There they can perform life-saving first aid measures, employing intensive medicine techniques so that the patient can be stabilised and safely transported to the appropriate clinic.

Since 2004 our anaesthetists have also manned the Rhineland-Palatinate intensive mobile unit around the clock. Thus patients with severe injuries or illnesses, who require uninterrupted intensive treatment, can be transferred from one clinic to another. The intensive mobile unit is equipped with modern respiration equipment that demands highly experienced operators.
Furthermore, some anaesthetists from our department serve in the region as senior emergency physicians. They are always called out when there is an emergency involving many injured or large scale catastrophes such as fires or other large-scale incidents.

The BG Trauma Clinic Ludwigshafen is the first clinic in Rhineland-Palatinate that has been assigned the role of an emergency medical centre. The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate has in this way recognised in 2005 the services of our clinic over many decades in emergency medicine. Emergency medical centres are designed to maintain and improve the quality of emergency services by providing the in-service training of emergency paramedics and physicians.
