Research group MINTOS – Medical Imaging and Navigation in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery

MINTOS is mainly concerned with innovative techniques of intraoperative 2D and 3D imaging. In addition to clinical studies, basic research and development is carried out in cooperation with medical computer scientists and industrial partners. Driven by clinical questions and problems, the focus is on software applications, hardware development and optimization of mobile C-arms as well as the early integration of innovations into the clinical workflow. In particular because of the last-mentioned aspects, the results of the group should promptly contribute to an improvement in the quality of patient treatment and outcomes.

Intraoperative CT diagnostics in clinical use

Since the beginning of 2018, the BG Trauma Center Ludwigshafen has been using the Airo system provided by the company Brainlab in acute traumatology and neurosurgery. This technique offers a new, powerful tool to improve patient care for the challenging surgical treatment of complex anatomical regions such as the pelvis, the spine and the brain. The large image volume and the high resolution make it possible to reduce the number of scans and to deal with even complex surgical procedures, such as the double-sided navigated instrumentation of the posterior pelvic ring, with only one scan. An additional benefit is the more precise control of results during the procedure, which helps to avoid subsequent operations.

On our topic page you will find further information about intraoperative computed tomography in clinical use.
